Rosita, the queen of the music hall

2020 / Dir. Misael Sanroque / Sala Melmac

2020 started very well, with several plays to perform, their rehearsals, the creation of the characters, the assembly of the scenes and finally with the opening nights. Now that the process of the first season has passed, I wanted to share more about Rosita, the queen of the music hall, because this play also became a project that removed questions about the lives of transsexual people. Let’s go to the beginning of everything.

Rosita, the dramatic play, is dedicated to the queen of the music-hall, she whom they all killed and who died by herself. It premiered on February 14th at the Sala Melmac in Barcelona and I am very, very proud to have been part of the cast and production of this staging.

I played La Flo, Rosita’s female impersonating friend, her first transsexual friend and her accomplice in trips and experiences. La Flo is a world in herself, her destiny has led her to flee from everywhere: from the Garibaldi square in Mexico, from the Parallel in Barcelona and from Carnaby Street.

A character who sought to belong to all races and all sexes. One of many fighters, women without fear who had a hard life but gave rise to friendship, to that family that you choose. Without a doubt, an emotional character with a deep background that never loses her sense of humor and her desire for freedom.

Rosita, the musical play without songs

Rosita is a musical without songs, it is the story of Ramón Benavides, Rosita, who lived under the Franco regime in 1969. Intense travel, prison, the stigmata of the 90’s, television… and it was there that they all killed her and she died by herself.

Although we presented it in February 2020, Rosita the play, premiered at the VIII Mutis Festival in 2017. She won the Best Original Text Award for Misael Sanroque from the Association of Theater Authors and the nomination for best supporting actor for Guillem Cuadra.

This February’s great success was not an easy path, less now where the independent theater sometimes seems an act of resistance. There were changes in the original cast, adaptations in the script, we wanted to build a decent stage for Rosita and above all, we needed a place where the 7 actors could rehearse on stage. It was a joy to have the support of the Sala Melmac, who granted us an Artistic Residence to be able to use their space for rehearsals and first presentations open to public. We also achieved a successful fundraising campaign that allowed us to bring Rosita to the stage with all her scenery, costumes and props.

Thanks to all the patrons and the public that attended!

But it is not everything I wanted to tell you, Rosita is a Mamut Teatre’s production.

Mamut Theatre?

Mamut Teatre is the company that I founded in 2016 with the actress and playwright Bea Murciano and the director and playwright Misael Sanroque. A great team!

Before working at Rosita, we also did it with the micro theater and the works: “Un Cuento de Hadas” (2016) “Lorca en Lorca” (2017), “Ladronas 3.0” (2018), “Amor Verdadero” (2018), “Micro-Mamut” (2018), “Gente Nocturna” (2019), and we are currently working on the “Noche de Comedia Mamut” as our next comedy project.

But, let’s go back to Rosita because in addition to being an incredible story that has managed to present itself in Barcelona with sold out tickets, it has a wonderful team that has made all this possible and whom I want to mention. Do you have any idea what is behind a play?
